Saturday online meeting with Bhante Joe Atulo. Save the date!
As previously announced, we warmly invite you to another online meeting with a monk of the Theravāda tradition.
This time the Dhamma talk will be given by Bhante Joe Atulo.
Bhante Joe was born in 1983 in London, Ontario (Canada). Growing up, he was interested in business and computers. A spiritual vocation seemed extremely unlikely. However, in high school he received — as a joke — a book containing teachings from various religions. While browsing it, he came across a description of the Four Noble Truths. Reading them brought about a deep inner transformation.
During high school and university Bhante Joe attended the Toronto Zen Buddhist Temple.
In time he moved there and began part-time training in preparation for becoming a priest. In 2006 he entered full-time training. Yet his growing interest in Theravāda Buddhism led him toward the Thai Forest Tradition. In 2007 he took part in a day-long retreat with Ajahn Viradhammo. During that retreat he learned about the newly established Tisaraṇa Buddhist Monastery. He went to Tisaraṇa and in 2008 was ordained as an anagārika (homeless practitioner).
In 2010 Bhante Joe received full ordination as a bhikkhu (monk), with Ajahn Viradhammo as his preceptor. He trained at Tisaraṇa until 2015, including one year in Thailand. In 2015 his teacher released him from formal dependence. He then spent six months in a monastery in California before returning to Canada and settling in the Toronto area.
Bhante Joe lived around Toronto from 2016 to 2019, where he was associated with Toronto Mahāvihāra and the West End Buddhist Temple. In November 2019 he traveled to Sri Lanka, where he currently resides.
