Online Meeting with Ajahn Brahmali
We warmly invite everyone who wishes to deepen their practice and work on themselves in the spirit of the Dhamma to an online meeting with Ajahn Brahmali.
Ajahn Brahmali was born in Norway in 1964. He first became interested in Buddhism and meditation after a visit to Japan in his early twenties.
After obtaining degrees in engineering as well as finance, he began monastic training as an anagārika (observing the eight precepts) at the Amaravati and Chithurst Buddhist monasteries in England. After encountering the teachings of Ajahn Brahm, he decided to continue his training in Australia at Bodhinyana Monastery, where he moved in 1994. In 1996 he was ordained as a bhikkhu (monk), with Ajahn Brahm as his teacher. In 2015, after 20 years as an ordained monk, he received the title Maha Thera (Pāḷi: maha – great, thera – elder).
Ajahn Brahmali has extensive knowledge of the Pāḷi language and the suttas themselves. Bhikkhu Bodhi, who translated most of the Pāḷi Canon into English for Wisdom Publications, described him as one of the principal assistants involved in the recent translation of The Numerical Discourses of the Buddha, the complete translation of the Aṅguttara Nikāya. Ajahn Brahmali has published two essays on dependent origination and—together with Bhante Sujato—the book Authenticity of the Early Buddhist Texts (on the authenticity of early Buddhist texts), published by the Buddhist Publication Society.
Monks of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia frequently turn to him for explanations regarding the Vinaya (monastic discipline) and the suttas, and they highly value his teachings on the suttas and the Pāḷi language. In addition, Ajahn Brahmali has played a significant role in most of the construction and maintenance projects at Bodhinyana Monastery and at the newly established Hermit Hill property in Serpentine.
In addition to giving talks at the Dhammaloka Centre in Perth, Ajahn Brahmali, together with Ajahn Sujato, conducted two courses in 2014 and 2015 on early Buddhism, rebirth, and kamma.
The clear and concise talks of Ajahn Brahmali make the Buddha’s teachings easily accessible to everyone. His activities in Australia include talks and retreats combined with the study of the suttas. As his popularity in Australia grew over the years, news of his work also spread abroad. He began traveling to Singapore, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka to share his knowledge and experience. He has visited Poland many times and helps in establishing Poland’s first Buddhist monasteries, both for nuns and for monks.
